6 tips to manage employees

It is sure not an easy task to manage, calibrate and lead people. Everyone has their own set of aspirations, dreams and goals along with a set of strengths and weaknesses.
But at the same time, your team/employees will surely determine how far you achieve in your business.
In this article, I will share with you the 6 tips you may need to choose and manage your team.
Here we go:

TIP 1 :

The most important tip, hack, rule, for choosing and managing people is really simple. It’s unbelievably simple. It’s so simple that once you start executing this simple rule, managing people becomes 1000X easier.
Here it is:
Hire great people that fit your company culture and managing your team becomes super, super easy.
But as you get older, you realize more and more that you can’t manage mediocre people to success.

You end up spending countless hours on improvement, but the results are minimal.
Instead, focus on hiring great people that fit your culture. There are so many benefits:
  •  Great people manage themselves. This is benefit number 1, 2, 3, 4 and five all rolled into one. And great people…
  •  Attract and hire other great people. When you have a team of great A players, other A players will naturally be attracted to joining your team. Hiring becomes much easier. And, when you start hiring only great people you…
  •  Collaborate with your team. You’re not a manager any more. At least not in the purest sense. Instead you’re working with your team, and helping your team succeed and grow. This then allows you to…
  • Work on higher level tasks. Your team has got it covered. They are excellent at what they do. You are now free to work in your zone of genius, and truly add value.
There are certain ways to go about while looking to manage the team:

TIP 2: BELIEVE IN THEM:

Working together with your team will need you to believe in your team. This can only happen if you relate to them and understand their thought process. Also it is best to avoid micromanaging as it will show lack of trust within your team’s capabilities. You can offer support and help whenever your team requires which will create the right synergy.

TIP 3: BE APPROACHABLE, but only enough:

It is important to be approachable as a manager whenever they are in a soup. However, you need to define it clearly that you should be approached only when they have done their share of hardwork and put in their 100% rather than counting on you for advice on every little thing.

That is the time you need to guide them and direct them in right direction. This will make them independent, a trait very much required for any professional and will help in their personal growth.

TIP 4: APPRECIATE THE EFFORTS AND POINT OUT THE MISTAKES:

If someone’s doing a good job, acknowledge it. Recognizing their efforts instills your team’s confidence in you showing that you pay attention to them and acknowledge their hard work. It motivates them and creates an aspirational factor among them. But, at the same time it is important to keep a balance between appreciation and criticism. Pointing out to mistakes constructively is equally important to help them know what are the areas they need to work upon.

TIP 5: CREATE AN OPEN DIALOGUE:

Clear communication is key to avoid miscommunication— everyone needs to know what’s going on. Regular updates can help prevent any issues that may arise, and forecast the outcome of your work.

Also, be open to feedback from your team members. A two-way relationship can help solidify trust, and also improve your team management techniques.

TIP 6: FOSTER DEVELOPMENT

Not only is managing talent a crucial factor for the business’s overall growth, but it can also ensure that your team members are happy in their roles. Also, it is important to consider how you align every individual’s goal to your holistic vision for the company. It has to be a win -win situation for both- the team and the company.

For this, you need to constantly evaluate if their individual goals are being met with. Apart from this, offering support and training will help in up-skilling because growing expertise can only really be beneficial.

TIP 6: FOCUS ON STRENGTHS THAN ON WEAKNESSES

Not every person in your team will have the same set of talents. Nor does every employee have to be expert in all areas. As a manager, it is important for you to identify their strengths and weakness. Analyze which weakness they need to work up on and hone them.

Also utilize their strengths and work towards polishing them. Afterall, a mix of various skill-sets will make your team complete and stretch to a holistic approach while planning big.
Above are just few personal learnings while managing my team, but again there is no better learning than hands on experience on field.

As a manager you will face many different circumstances and you will learn and begin your journey as good manager, just be open to changes and be critical about yourself along with others, that is the only way to grow.
